Introducing the Transcendental Meditation Technique in Existing Schools

Transcendental Meditation® has been implemented in existing private, public, and charter schools, as well as in after-school programmes all over the world. Schools add a 'Quiet Time' period--two 10-5 minute sessions--during which students practice the Transcendental Meditation technique.

What Educators and Students Say

George H. Rutherford, PhD
Principal of the Ideal Academy Public Charter School (K-8),Washington, DC, USA

'I have tried every program that has been put out by the Federal Government to improve students' academic performance, to reduce the violence, to eradicate drugs. None of those programs did what they thought it would do. The Transcendental Meditation program is the one program that will do all of it, and more. Our kids are able to focus better and we are able to develop brighter students because of the Transcendental Meditation program.'

Dr George Rutherford was one of the first educators to establish the Quiet Time programme--a period at the beginning and end of each school day that allows the children to practice the Transcendental Meditation technique. As the principal and chief operating officer of the Fletcher-Johnson Educational Center in Washington, DC he introduced the Transcendental Meditation technique to more than a thousand students and faculty in the mid-1990s.

Dr Rutherford has been in education for 45 years, and a principal for 35 years. He is currently the principal of Ideal Academy Public Charter School, an award-winning school located in the heart of Washington, DC

Carmen N'Namdi
Principal of the Nataki Talibah Schoolhouse of Detroit

'Our staff was taught the TM technique for the mental and physical health benefits that result in the work environment with the release of stress. In students, we have seen the TM program enhance study skills, academic performance, critical thinking skills, interpersonal and social skills--all because of the deep rest that the body is receiving. We are looking forward to the years to come when more and more schools and work environments will realize that not much gets done until the stress is out of the way.'

Ms. N'Namdi is Co-founder and Principal of the Nataki Talibah Schoolhouse of Detroit (K-8); Chair of the Board of the National Charter School Institute; and Member of the Board of the Michigan Association of Public School Academies. The Nataki School is an award-winning middle school where hundreds of teachers and students over the past nine years have learned the Transcendental Meditation technique as part of Nataki's Wellness Program.

In this video, the NBC Today Show reports on Transcendental Meditation and the Nataki Talibah Schoolhouse, as well as a University of Michigan study which shows improvements in test scores and a reduction in stress and anxiety. (4 minutes)
