Taking Care of the Child Inside
Maharishi Ayurveda considers that every newborn child is divine and precious. During pregnancy a mother has the opportunity to contribute maximum to her child’s capacity for perfection, happiness, and success in life.
The connection between mother and baby is very strong. A mother’s diet, mood, and emotions greatly affect the baby. If a mother is happy and healthy, then the baby will be happy and healthy and will have the best possible start in life.
Maharishi Ayurveda and the Postpartum Mother
Even the healthiest mothers can experience enormous postpartum fatigue and stress. A first-time mother, especially, faces the transition into motherhood with all of its tremendous responsibilities and joys just when she feels most exhausted and depleted. Maharishi Ayurveda focuses on revitalizing the mother through diet, rejuvenation techniques, and rest.
A principle of Maharishi Ayurveda is that if you help a mother rejuvenate—if you “mother the mother”—then she can care for her newborn with joy and ease instead of feeling exhausted and overwhelmed. Many mothers who follow the simple procedures of Maharishi Ayurveda say that they feel even better than before they were pregnant.
Recommendations for Postpartum
A mother and her baby need lots of rest, and a quiet, protected environment during the first few weeks after the birth. A daily ayurvedic oil massage (abhyanga) is a powerful way to relax and rejuvenate the mother and soothe and nuture the baby. Foods should be easily digestible, yet very nourishing.
Pregnant women and new mothers are encouraged to have personal consultations with Maharishi Ayurveda experts to get advice specifically for their own, and their child’s physiology.
